2012 NSW/ACT Country Squad Announced
AFL NSW/ACT would like to congratulate all players selected for the NSW/ACT squad to play in the Australian Country Football Championships to be held in Wagga Wagga from July 19-22. This is the first year that NSW and the ACT have combined to play as one side in the biannual carnival.
Coach Jason McPherson said he was pleased with the quality of the squad, which includes players from five different leagues from around the NSW/ACT.
“I’m really happy with the squad this year. After an arduous selection process I’m satisfied we’ve picked the best players from around the state,” he said.
“The availability of Sydney players for this carnival has strengthened the quality and depth of the squad. I’m particularly excited about the leg speed contained in the squad, as well as the quality of the people we’ve chosen.
“The biggest hurdle for us now lies in preparing for the carnival. The players are geographically distant from each other, which is always a challenge.”
This year the Ovens & Murray league dominated selection, with 18 players representing the region. AFL Sydney produced 11 players, the Riverina with five, Central Murray with three and the Murray region producing just one.
A final squad of 25 players will be selected to represent NSW/ACT in the competition. The team will train three times before the final selections are made.
