After going into the game with fifteen top up players from the Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy, the GIANTS fought courageously to claw their way back into the contest after being as much as 41 points down at one stage in the game.
The GIANTS showed plenty of fight to storm home, and got within two goals, but the clock put paid to their fight back with the siren sounding as the GIANTS surged again.
UWS GIANTS coach, Brett Hand spoke to the GIANTS website after the game and said he was impressed by the performance given the fight shown amid challenging circumstances with so many new players involved.
“The players never gave up which was good,” said Hand.
“To have so many new players playing with us today, and to gel like they did and take on a new game style like that, I was very impressed.
“Our senior players were fantastic and I was really happy with the performance.
“It was a bunch of kids out there today, with our oldest player being 21.
“The size difference really didn’t hurt us as we had players willing to go in underneath and win the hard ball and contested ball so I was really pleased with that and they never stopped trying towards the end there.”
Hand was impressed with the effort shown by the 15 Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy players who took part in the game, and said the game was a great tool in their development.
Taylor Adams was best on ground for the GIANTS, with his physical presence in the midfield winning him a lot of possession and he provided great drive forward and was busy throughout.
Adam Tomlinson was lively up forward and kicked three goals, with Tim Golds also putting in a strong display, with Golds lively around the ground.
The GIANTS travel to Darwin next Saturday night to take on the NT Thunder at TIO Stadium.
