GWS GIANTS out and about

The GWS GIANTS will be visiting their local fans this Tuesday December 11, when 20 players travel across greater western Sydney to visit Auskick participants in schools and after school centres.

The greater western Sydney region enjoyed the highest rate of growth in participants of all NSW/ACT regions, adding over 8000 participants to register almost 29 per cent growth year on year.

The GWS GIANTS will enter their second year in the AFL with a bumper roster of young talent, including number one pick from this year’s NAB AFL Draft, Lachie Whitfield.

Regional Manager Dean Connors said it was important for the players to meet their fans and spread the word about AFL in the area.

“We’re lucky to have the GIANTS as our local team and it’s great the guys spend so much time in the community,” he said.

“It gives them an opportunity to meet their fans and hopefully introduce some new fans to the game.

“We just had our biggest year of participation to date, and we’re keen to make sure that every kid in greater western Sydney has the opportunity to play AFL in 2013 and beyond.”

Last week, the GIANTS spent a massive two days in the ACT region for their Australia Post AFL Community Camp.

Over the two-day community camp, GIANTS players and coaches met over 6,000 people across the ACT community at schools, clubs and hospitals.

GIANTS players joined in questions and answer and skills sessions with over 5,000 students in 47 schools as well as meeting 400 excited fans at junior clubs in the region.

Over 40 people enjoyed education sessions with GIANTS coaches while the club’s Co-Major Partner Lifebroker made a special donation of a blackboard and beanbags to the pediatric ward at Canberra hospital.

Tom Scully along with Toby Greene, Curtly Hampton, Sam Reid, and Anthony Miles were on hand to hand out some great GIANTS gear and a special appearance from G-MAN brought some smiles to the faces of the kids (and the staff).

The Canberra Hospital is currently refurbishing its Womens and Childrens ward and will soon move into a purpose built section of the hospital where the Lifebroker donated blackboard and bean bags will take pride of place.

“We’ve really enjoyed our community camp so far and to be able to come in here and give these kids and their families something small to make their stay a bit more fun is pretty special,” Scully said.

“A big thank you to Lifebroker for donating this gear and we really hope that the kids get some enjoyment out of it.”
