Paul Kelly Cup hits the Riverina

St Michael’s Coolamon could have some future AFL stars in their ranks after successfully booking their place in next month’s Riverina final of the Paul Kelly Cup.

The enthusiastic students overcame a spirited Henschke Primary School outfit by just three points in a closely contested semi-final.

The win gives the St Michael’s team the opportunity to show off their talent under lights at Wagga Wagga’s recently re-developed Robertson Oval against South Wagga Public School in next month’s final.

South Wagga made sure of their place in the decider after earlier defeating South Heart Primary School.

In the girls’ competition, Wagga Public School was the dominant force, defeating Lake Albert Public School 18 – 7.

In a promising sign for the future of AFL in the Riverina, over 450 boys and girls graced the Jubilee Park turf for Tuesday’s gala day, an event that saw a record number of teams participate in the competition.

The Paul Kelly Cup gives year five and six students the opportunity to play AFL in a fun and safe environment, and is the largest AFL primary school competition in NSW and the ACT.

Southern NSW AFL development manager, Marc Geppert, told The Daily Advertiser  it was great to see such a big turnout on the day, and was thrilled at the increased participation of girls in the sport.

“We had a record number of teams, which is really good,” said Geppert.

“It was fantastic to see the girls’ side of things getting bigger and bigger.

“They don’t get the opportunity to play much so it’s good to see that when they do, they’re getting out there and having a go.”
