NSW/ACT Notebook: Round 8 Review
Sydney Swans 15.17 (107) def. Hawthorn 13.10 (88)
The Swans made a Friday night statement as Buddy Franklin got to taste success against his old side.
The home side got off to the better start, earning an 18-point quarter time lead. However, accuracy was an issue – they were 4.8 with Franklin beginning a streak of seven behinds without a goal.
Hawthorn pushed and by late in the third term had the lead, setting up a tense final quarter.
When the game was there to be won, Franklin finally found his touch, booting a set shot and another around the body as he was being tackles in the space of a couple of minutes.
Sydney would end up 19-point winners, helped by dominance in tackles (85-54) and inside 50s (65-48).
Dan Hannebery (40 disposals, nine inside 50s, one goal) was a standout. Josh Kennedy had 36 disposals and 11 tackles. Up forward, Kurt Tippett kicked four goals.
Luke Parker and Jarrad McVeigh also continued their good form.
For the Hawks, Jarrad Roughead and Luke Breust had three goals each.
Sydney next face Essendon at Etihad Stadium.
West Coast Eagles 30.8 (188) def. GWS GIANTS 12.5 (77)
The GIANTS have endured another tough trip out west, losing to the West Coast Eagles by 111 points.
Eagle forward Josh Kennedy was the headline act, amassing 11 goals straight to break out of his major form slump in the early rounds.
The GIANTS held their ground early but late goals pushed the quarter time deficit to four goals. From there, the Eagles gradually added to their buffer.
Inside 50s showed a glaring difference between the sides, the Eagles going forward 67 times compared to the GIANTS’ 27 times.
Hitouts were also an issue as the GIANTS went up against Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui, who combined for 51 hitouts to 29.
Callan Ward was best afield for GWS with 29 disposals and eight clearances. Adam Tomlinson took ten marks with his 19 disposals and a goal.
Devon Smith and Will Hoskin-Elliot had two goals each, the only multiple goal kickers in orange.
Matt Priddis was West Coast’s best behind Kennedy with 26 disposals, 13 clearances and a goal.
The GIANTS now have the bye.
