Aylett Flying Up at Bomberland
By Jack McAnespie
It is an enduring ambition for many junior NSW/ACT footballers throughout their younger years – to be drafted to a Sydney-based club.
For Southern NSW born young-gun Kurt Aylett, his recruitment to the Greater Western Sydney Giants in mid-2010 was the recognition of a lifelong dream.
A tall and athletic midfielder, Aylett was scouted early in the Giant’s recruiting process, and was touted as a future star of the club.
However, fate delivered Aylett a cruel blow, as he sustained a number of injuries throughout his earlier season at the Giants.
It was however, during the Giants debut season in 2012, that Aylett suffered his greatest setback, as he struggled to keep hit body fit while battling an ongoing ACL injury.
Aylett was only able to amass one AFL game in his two years on the Giants senior list, and looked destined to fade into the ether as a top level footballer.
Throughout the 2013 draft period however, Aylett was gifted a second lease on his footballing life, as he was sent by GWS to the Bombers in exchange for draft picks.
Aylett has managed to remain injury free since his horror run of setbacks prior to his move from GWS, and has impressed down at Bomberland – so much so that he was selected to play his first game for his new club, in Round 8 against Brisbane at the Gabba.
Starting as the substitute, Aylett accumulated seven disposals and took three marks in just over a quarter of football, and impressed with his dashing run and line-breaking attributes.
There is no doubt that the Aussie Rules community will be seeing a lot more of the 22 year-old New South Wales dasher in the coming seasons.
