NSW/ACT Notebook: Round 11 Wrap

By Michael DiFabrizio

Sydney Swans 22.16 (148) def. Geelong 5.8 (38)

The Swans have sent a statement to the rest of the competition, demolishing Geelong by 110 points on Thursday night.

It was an utterly one-sided affair, with the Swans holding the Cats goalless in the first quarter and allowing just one goal in the first half.

Sydney’s big-name forwards, meanwhile, were putting on a show for the SCG fans.

Kurt Tippett kicked five goals, while Lance Franklin had four and Adam Goodes three. Franklin registered his 600th career goal during the match.

The ball-winners also saw plenty of it (the Swans won disposals 467-359), led by Nick Malceski with 37 touches, Craig Bird with 33, Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker with 32 each, Rhyce Shaw with 31 and Dan Hannebery with 30.

Ben McGlynn (11 tackles, 10 inside 50s, one goal) and Kieren Jack (two goals, six score assists, 29 disposals) also figured among the home side’s best.

The shock result put Sydney in the top four at Geelong’s expense and established their credentials as a potential premiership favourite.

It was Geelong’s biggest loss since 1990 and their seventh-worst of all time.

The Swans, who are riding a six-game win streak, next face the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon Stadium.

Hawthorn 14.10 (94) def. GWS GIANTS 13.9 (87)

The four points went to the team who was expected to win them, but the GIANTS were far from pushovers – they lost by just seven points to reigning premiers Hawthorn on Sunday.

The contest was close throughout, with the margin always staying under three goals.

The Hawks took a one-point lead into the final quarter, with the teams trading goals until Jack Gunston extended the lead to 12 in the 22nd minute.

Adam Treloar got one back and soon after Jonathon Patton had the chance to bring the deficit back to one, but his set shot was wide.

The GIANTS gave the Hawks and their top four hopes a scare though, and in the process they put a tough pair of losses behind them.

Devon Smith was superb with four goals, 26 disposals and 10 tackles. Treloar and Lachie Whitfield had 32 touches each.

Callan Ward, meanwhile, had 29 disposals, 22 contested possessions, 13 tackles and 13 clearances.

The Hawks’ best was Isaac Smith, who had four goals and 23 touches.

The GIANTS’ next assignment is Essendon at Spotless Stadium on Saturday.
