AFL Riverina to review competitions

MEDIA RELEASE FROM AFL RIVERINA

AFL Riverina to review competitions

AFL Riverina will this month commence a review all competitions to identify the various strengths and weaknesses of the current competition
structures and identify recommendations relating to future structures for the sustainable long-term benefit of AFL Riverina’s stakeholders.

The overarching objective will be the development and implementation of strategies to support growth and sustainability for AFL Riverina’s
competitions acknowledging the specific needs of the competition and changing landscape of the region.

AFL Riverina Chairman Michael Irons believes the review will promote longevity for AFL Riverina and its competitions. “It’s necessary to review
and reflect on our competitions, as we have 106 football teams, 143 netball teams and approximately 5400 football and netball participants.”

“The structure of these competitions is unique in regard to the crossover of Junior and Senior Clubs, due to a number of factors, most importantly
the significant geographical distance of the AFL Riverina competitions spanning almost 150 square kilometres.”

“This review is important for not only our competitions but our clubs and to identify and align with their needs.” Irons said.

“There are challenges across all of the competitions in regard to certain age groups, given the scope of the review.”

The Review will be administered by an independent Project Consultant David Burgess, who is currently leading the AFL Sydney Club Development
project, which supports clubs in developing a strong, stable and sustainable future.

“The Board believes David will bring a neutral view in undertaking the Review and will be supported by the AFL (NSW/ACT) Working Party, the
Board and other necessary stakeholder consultants” Irons said.

Key areas of focus for the review will include identifying areas of growth and decline in the region, competition pathways, junior and senior
competition structures, balancing and equalising junior and senior competitions and the growth of female football.

With the consultation and research component of the review underway, the review process will come to completion in May 2019.
