Scots take State Final
The AFL NSW/ACT State Open Final saw The Scots School Albury taking on Hunter Sports High School in Queanbeyan last Thursday, with Scots prevailing in cold and greasy conditions at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Hunter Sports High started quickly with the first three scoring shots of the match; their tackling pressure catching the Scots off guard.
Scots quickly turned things around with the last five scoring shots of the quarter and leading 25 – 8 at the first quarter break.
Scots, with some more experienced players were dominating the middle, with their 200cm ruckman Iain McGillivray leading the way. They asserted themselves in the second quarter and even the efforts Hunter’s best player Matthew Spinks couldn’t get Hunter Sports High back in to the game.
However, Hunter Sports persisted and were enthusiastic in contested football. They kicked several goals on the counter attack and kept the Scots School honest throughout the duration of the game.
Scots, with a little bit more class around the football and with some better decision making had far more opportunities with the football and finished with a convincing score line of 15.8 98 to 5.4 34.
Congratulations to both teams involved, with the game played in great spirit, and with great skill despite the dewy conditions.
To help present the state cup, GWS GIANTS captain Phil Davis was on hand after travelling to Canberra ahead of his team to present the cup. Davis said he was extremely impressed with the talent on display.
